The Occupational Therapy Assistant curriculum is designed to provide an in-depth study of the occupational therapy field. ICM School of Business & Medical Careers assumes primary responsibility for the academic and clinical components of this educational program and assures that the practice activities assigned to students in a clinical setting are appropriate to the program. The objective is to prepare graduates to successfully take the national examination for certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant and to attain the skills and attitudes necessary for career success. Graduates of the program will be able to sit for the national certification examination for the Occupational Therapy Assistant sponsored by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). Most states require licensure in order to practice: however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT certification examination. Duties of the Occupational Therapy Assistant graduate may include teaching daily living skills, developing perceptual motor skills and sensory integrative functioning, developing play skills and prevocational and leisure capacities, designing and fabricating or applying selected orthotic and prosthetic devices and equipment, using specifically designed crafts and exercises to enable functional performance, administering and interpreting tests such as manual muscle and range of motion, and adapting environments for the handicapped.
