The objective of the Paralegal/Legal Assistant program is to prepare students with the knowledge, technical skills, and work habits required for an entry-level position in the legal field. Curriculum offers students a general knowledge of legal concepts, an understanding of and appreciation for specific areas of substantive law, and develops technical skills in legal research, writing, and recognition of legal issues. Although Legal Assistants do not engage in the actual practice of law and cannot give legal advice or represent clients in court, Legal Assistants do perform a variety of legal tasks under the supervision of an attorney. This program is designed to expose students to the basic legal principles necessary to function effectively in a law office, public agency, or business environment. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree. Duties for the graduates of this program will include legal research utilizing computer assisted legal research, drafting legal documents, conducting legal investigations, and assisting attorneys in trial preparation.
