The objectives of the Medical Assistant program are to train students to acquire satisfactory clinical and laboratory skills and demonstrate competence in a physician's office, hospital or medical administrative setting. Upon satisfactory completion of the training, students will be qualified to assume entry-level positions as Medical Assistants in medical offices, clinics, medical insurance industries and various medical specialties. Graduates of the Medical Assistant program will be able to perform the duties and skills required of a back office Medical Assistant. In addition, the successful graduate will have a working knowledge of various front office procedures, as well. Graduates will demonstrate competencies in anatomy and physiology, human disease, medical terminology and skills to assist in clinical/administrative procedures. Students will experience a blend of classroom theory and hands-on clinical laboratory training that will enable them to quickly grasp the special requirements of the Medical Assistant. In addition, the student will have the unique opportunity to participate in a Medical Assistant externship program. For six weeks the student will work in an off-campus medical office setting supervised by a medical provider. To maintain the program's educational objectives and integrity, compensation during the externship program is not permitted. In addition to classroom, laboratory and externship training, students should be prepared to devote additional time to outside preparation and study.
