The objective of the Pharmacy Technician program is to prepare students with the knowledge, technical skills and work habits required for an entry-level position in the pharmacy field or a related area. Graduates of this program work directly under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist. General duties may include transcribing physicians' orders and hospital charts; selecting drug products; preparing medications for dispensing, labeling and refill authorization; entering computer data for patient profile maintenance; and procedures for acquiring all necessary information. They also assist in quality management procedures and security measures. Other duties may include preparing unit dose medications, IV admixtures and sterile irrigations. Prior to graduation, students are required to complete a 160-hour externship at a local retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, residential pharmacy or other pharmaceutical facility where they may also find job opportunities.
