The Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS, pronounced 'Miss'), an affiliate of Middlebury College, is a graduate school in Monterey, California, United States, that specializes in programs in international relations, international business, language teaching, and translation and interpretation. It is a small, private graduate school that educates American and international students for professional, global careers in international business, the international policy world, translation and interpretation, and language teaching. In addition to expertise in their respective fields of study, Monterey Institute graduates attain second-language proficiency, intercultural awareness and communication skills, and a global mindset. The Monterey Institute was established in 1955 to teach modern languages in their cultural context and has evolved into an international professional graduate school dedicated to preparing students to respond effectively to the complex challenges of a rapidly changing global environment. The school has approximately 700 students and 70 faculty. Although its focus is primarily on graduate education, it also has a small honors undergraduate program that qualified students may transfer into. The school is known for its diverse student population. One-third of the students come from outside the US, and they represent 50 countries. In 2005, the Monterey Institute was ranked among the top 100 global MBA programs by the Financial Times. In December 2005, the Monterey Institute signed an affiliation agreement with Middlebury College in Vermont. This new affiliation brought a new president, Clara Yu.
