The mission of the Wright Institute is to educate clinical psychologists to practice at the highest level of professional competence; analyze and evaluate research, theory, and practice; and make appropriate life-long use of the evolving body of psychological knowledge.

The Wright Institute was founded in 1968 by the distinguished psychologist Nevitt Sanford, a pioneer in the integration of social issues and clinical psychology. Sanford believed strongly in the capacity of adults to continue to learn and grow throughout their lives. His developmental approach and emphasis on the possibilities of lifelong learning form a key part of the foundation on which the Wright's doctoral program is built.

The Wright Institute is a Clinical Psychology Graduate School in Berkeley, California, offering a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) program in Clinical Psychology. The doctoral program is accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

We teach the scientific knowledge base of clinical psychology, and enrich that learning by exploring the meanings of students' own experiences in relationships with clients. This unique learning method enables students to formulate and address clinical problems by examining the lenses through which they filter experience.

The curriculum at the Wright Institute solidly grounds students in science and research methods, while challenging them to explore the conscious and unconscious ways in which they and their clients influence the creation and direction of therapy. Coursework is integrated with practical experience, providing for the systematic, progressive acquisition of skills and knowledge.

A key theme woven into the Wright Institute experience is the exploration of how social and cultural contexts influence the way a person experiences others and the world. The Wright Institute believes that becoming competent to deal with human diversity is an integral part of being an effective clinician. By enhancing their understanding of the range of human differences, practitioners can work and communicate effectively with a wide variety of communities and groups.

At the Wright Institute, students become engaged in the interplay between rigorous clinical investigation and the exploration of how their own experience influences the therapeutic encounter. The Wright believes it is more important for students to be able to pose compelling questions than to arrive at the "right answers."

Faculty at the Wright Institute draw on a range of theoretical orientations, including contemporary psychoanalytic, cognitive, family systems and relational approaches. They are chosen from the Bay Area's diverse clinical community for their practical expertise, theoretical sophistication, and ability to integrate theory with a hands-on approach to actual clinical situations.

The Institute is located in a three-story English Tudor building one block from the University of California, Berkeley campus, within easy walking distance of restaurants, cafes, bookstores, and shops.

The San Francisco Bay Area contains a wealth of educational and research institutions, clinical training settings, sports and recreational facilities, restaurants, museums, high-tech industries, parks, and concert halls. These cultural advantages, along with the mild climate, attract an extraordinary community of psychologists, scholars, and other intellectuals to the Bay Area.
