The mission of the Pace Institute for Environmental and Regional Studies is to foster a sustainable relationship between humans and nature with special attention to the diverse ecological, social and cultural values of the Hudson River bio-region.

A university has a dual responsibility to study and serve. It is a part of, not apart from, the larger community and ecosystem in which it is location. Because environmental problems are quintessentially social problems that first emerge on a local level, the university is uniquely equipped to assist in addressing them. Its pedagogy and scholarship should speak to social responsibility, environmental sustainability and community service and be based on vigorous inquiry into values as well as practical skills.

The Pace University community is located in the most populous sections of the 154-mile Hudson River estuary, an ecosystem paradigmatic of the inter-woven ecological, social, cultural and economic issues that characterize the global environmental crisis. As the only university between New York City and Albany, Pace University has both an opportunity and an obligation to play a significant role in furthering understanding of the human place in nature and advancing ecologically sound policy and decision-making.

The Pace Institute for Environmental and Regional Studies (PIERS) will be a formal organizing force within the university that initiates and coordinates work by the Pace community in advancement of the PIERS mission. PIERS is a logical outgrowth of the university's long and distinguished history of dedication to environmental education and community service, as illustrated by Pace Law School's international reputation as a leader in environmental law, the establishment of Environmental Studies as Dyson College's first interdisciplinary major, and the creation of the Pace Environmental Center, the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic and the Pace Environmental Studies Clinic.
