From the GGC website: http://www.ggc.usg.edu/about.college.php Georgia Gwinnett College provides access to targeted baccalaureate level degrees that meet the economic development needs of the growing and diverse population of the northeast Atlanta metropolitan region. It emphasizes the innovative use of technology and active-learning environments to provide its students enhanced learning experiences, practical opportunities to apply knowledge, increased scheduling flexibility, and a variety of course delivery options. In the spring of 2005, the Georgia General Assembly and the University System Board of Regents approved a plan to create the first new state college in Georgia since 1970. Located on the former Gwinnett University Center campus in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Gwinnett College is a high tech, four-year institution serving the higher educational needs of Gwinnett County. The following description is from the college's website: "Founded as the University System's third state college, Georgia Gwinnett's mission is to provide a range of associate degree programs, as well as a number of bachelor degree programs focused on the economic development needs of Gwinnett County and the surrounding area. The existing Gwinnett University Center will be phased out as lower-division students from Georgia Perimeter and upper-division students from UGA, SPSU and MCG graduate or transfer to other institutions. Once the transition is complete, the new institution will offer all undergraduate education, with UGA continuing to provide graduate programs and continuing-education courses. Georgia Gwinnett College currently offers junior-level courses and will enroll its first freshman class in the fall of 2007. Degree programs focus on four general areas that are important to meeting the needs of the region and the state: information technology, business, biology and psychology." On March 6th, 2008, Georgia Gwinnett College selected the institution's mascot, a Grizzly. The Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies came from a long selection process in which students voted. On June 26th, 2008, it was announced that the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges has granted GGC candidacy status towards its accreditation. Candidacy status also allows GGC to apply immediately for federal financial aid programs such as Pell grants and Stafford loans—programs that are used throughout the nation to help students and families pay for college. The Hope scholarship and GGC Foundation grants are currently available to Georgia Gwinnett students. GGC's new status allows it to proceed in its pursuit of membership with SACS over the next 18 to 24 months. Its staff and faculty, as a team, are completing the remainder of the documentation required to verify compliance with additional SACS requirements. "Candidacy means that GGC has met critical standards in several key areas," said Cathy Hakes, GGC director of accreditation and certification. "Areas such as faculty qualifications, academic programs, financial resources, facilities and library resources were all accepted as compliant under SACS published guidelines, validating the tremendous efforts of faculty and staff over the last two years. Candidacy also supports seamless transferability of GGC credits to colleges and universities across the nation," added Hakes. Many of our students have already successfully applied and been accepted to graduate schools, including one student who has been accepted into a master’s program at Harvard University."
