In general, the “mean” is the sum of the total values (e.g., wages) in the data set or survey divided by number of values (while the “median” is the middle value in same the sequence. The term “mean annual wage” (or “MAW”) is calculated by multiplying the mean hourly wage as determined by the BLS by a “year-round, full-time” hours figure of 2,080 hours. So, for example, the Healthcare Practitioners and Technical group’s mean hourly wage of $14.65, multiplied by 2,080, results in the mean annual wage of $30,470.

What’s Hot: Assistants lead the way in the Healthcare Support group. Occupational Therapist Assistants (at $59,530) and Physical Therapist Assistants ($56,850) head up the Best Paid list, followed by Massage Therapists ($44,480) and Dental Assistants ($37,890), further indicate the high regard in which healthcare professionals are held.
What’s Not: On the other hand, Home Health Aides ($23,600) and Veterinary Assistants and Laboratory Animal Caretakers at $26,810, up from $22,790, could use a little more support of their own as they top the Least Paid list. It is interesting to compare the Veterinary Assistants, with the highly trained and regarded Veterinarians, who have a mean annual wage of $100,560.
