In Hawaiian, ka huku means "the projection", presumably a reference to Kahuku Point nearby, the northernmost point of land on the island of Oʻahu. As of the 2000 Census, Kahuku had a total population of 2,097. The ZIP Code for Kahuku is 96731—a fact that became well-known in the mid-1970s when a popular television game show, The Diamond Head Game, was contested on the grounds of Del Webb's Kuilima Hotel (today known as the Turtle Bay Resort), located there.
