Bridgeport is a small city in Jackson County, Alabama, United States. At the time of 2000 census the population was 2,728. Bridgeport is included in the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. Because of its location on both a rail line and the Tennessee River, Bridgeport was strategic during the American Civil War. It was the site of a major skirmish on August 26, 1862, and numerous other small actions took place in the area.
