Wappinger (although most locals call it Wappingers) is a town of in Dutchess County, New York in the United States. The population was 26,274 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from the Wappani Indians that inhabited the area. "Wappani" means inhabitants of the eastern land. The Town of Wappinger is located in the southern part of the county. US Route 9 passes through the town. A satellite campus of Dutchess Community College is in the northern part of the town. (from wikipedia)
