Lakewood is a town in Oconto County, Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 875. The primary industry of Lakewood was timber for many years but in recent decades this has changed to the service industry.[citation needed] Most revenue brought into the area is the direct result of visitors spending money in taverns, restaurants, grocery stores, buying real estate, etc. While the area is still surrounded by the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, it is a working forest which has been clear-cut in the past and cut-over many times.[citation needed] As recently as the 1950s the Lakewood area was known for its virgin timber and pristine nature but aggressive logging and clear-cutting significantly changed the face of the area.
