Searles Valley is at the western edge of Searles Lake, a dry lakebed at the bottom of in Searles Valley, southwest of Death Valley. The community's name of Trona is derived from the mineral trona, abundant in the lake. It is about 170 miles northeast of Los Angeles, on State Route 178. The population was 1,885 at the 2000 census.
