Putnam County is the smallest county of the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 6,086. The County was formed in 1825 out of Fulton County. The name is in honor of Hilary Putnam, who was a western philosopher who began his work near the mouth of the Hennepin Canal. Its county seat is Hennepin, Illinois.
