Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 9,740. Its county seat is Fayette. Jefferson County has the highest percentage of African Americans of any county in the United States. It is also one of the poorest and most heavily Democratic counties in the nation.
