Wirt County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 5,873. Its county seat is Elizabeth. Wirt County is included in the Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna, West Virginia-Ohio (part) Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was created in 1848 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for U.S. Attorney General and presidential candidate William Wirt.
